Learning Transformed: 8 Keys to Designing Tomorrow’s Schools, Today
Having no historical precedent, the current speed of technological breakthroughs has lead to the coming age of workplace automation, dramatically altering the world of work that our students will enter upon graduation. With the vast disparities of inequity that have existed for centuries, all that is known about how students learn, and the predictions regarding the world that our students will face tomorrow, utilizing a traditional, one-size-fits-all approach to teaching and learning is educational malpractice. Built upon the foundation of leadership and school culture, a redesigned learning experience fundamentally shifts the teaching and learning paradigm to one that is personal, while altering the use of authentic assessments, how technology is leveraged, the spaces in which the learning occurs, the way educators grow professionally, how schools collaborate with the community, and ultimately, the sustainability of the system as a whole. In this session, Murray will dissect these eight keys, which each serve as a puzzle piece for redesigning the learning experience, to unlock tomorrow’s schools so that today’s modern learners leave ready to create new industries, find new cures, and solve world problems. We must create tomorrow’s schools today and you are part of the solution.

Creating Schools and Classrooms that are Future Ready
When we analyze the US education system and classrooms across our nation, we see dramatic differences and gaps in innovation. Side-by-side images of classrooms from 1917 and one from 2017, yields eerie similarities in many schools today, even with the 100-year difference. What can be done? How can schools and classrooms transform from those from the industrial era where desks are in rows, students are facing forward, and have teachers always front and center to ones that are student centered, personalized, and leverage the power of technology? Districts and schools across the nation are transforming into ones that are Future Ready, revamping such aspects as teacher empowerment, personalized professional learning, innovative learning spaces, community partnerships, digital learning initiatives, among others. This keynote will inspire school leaders and provide free tools and resources to empower them to transform their districts, schools, and classrooms into ones that better prepare students for the world they face tomorrow.

Chocolate Broccoli Balls: Hiding Learning within Immersive Simulations
Typical education games are called “chocolate-covered broccoli”: the eat-your-veggies learning is poorly disguised within the artificial structure of yummy games. Immersive simulations inspire students to eat their broccoli so they can solve motivating, realistic problems in lifelike situations. During this session, you will experience computer-based, content-rich experiences with award-winning simulations such as “Win the Whitehouse,” “The Redistricting Game,” GoogleLitTrips, building and launching rockets with NASA, and identifying and killing viruses with your trusty Molecular Rover. Bring your laptop and download information before the session at goo.gl/wVFeVd.

Digital Age Learning and Reflection with ePortfolios
As 21st century learners, we realize students must be prepared with high levels of academic strength including literacy, digital skills, critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration and communication. ePortfolios provide an authentic way for students to showcase their dynamic abilities, evidence of learning and individual growth over time while yielding a powerful and comprehensive digital resume for student reflection. We’ll discuss best practices for implementation, cultivation of digital learning through the use of an ePortfolio, and how Google Sites has been a transformative platform for Northwest ISD.

Create Powerful and Free Student ePortfolios with Google Sites
Empower your students to take an active role in their learning by using Google Drive to curate an objective-based collection of artifacts that demonstrates their knowledge and skills. From this collection, your students will design Google Sites ePortfolios that showcase their abilities to their chosen audience in a way that provides a more vivid representation of their learning and growth. In this hands-on session, you will learn the process and create a sample student ePortfolio.

SCRATCHing the Surface - Coding
This session will be a basic overview to using Scratch, which is a free drag-and-drop program by MIT designed for kindergarteners in which anyone can code and create interactive storiesgames, and animations. Participants will learn how to create a simple animation and how to build or “remix” other user’s projects. This can be used as an educator tool to create interactive experiences or as a teaching tool in which students can create their own projects. Flash-compatible devices or browsers are recommended if you would like to practice using Scratch. Check your Flash here.
